 Last
week at Birdland, Ann Harada, Leah Hocking and Liz McCartney scored
a knockout with T.L.C. (Three Loud Chicks): the
kind of polished, well-executed nightclub act that used to be a
matter of routine for Broadway stars decades ago but which has become
a true rarity today. Featuring smooth direction by Alan
Muraoka and musical oversight by Altar Boyz’s
Gary Adler, all three ladies wowed the audience with their powerhouse
voices and delicious charm as they ran through a well-selected repertoire
of pop songs and showtunes including a series of “Duets of
the Damned” from doomed offerings such as Dance of the Vampires,
Carrie and Side Show. Brassier and sassier than most shows the three
ladies have collectively appeared in elsewhere, here’s hoping
Harada, Hocking and McCartney bring back T.L.C. for an extended
